Part D – sound and light signals

Rule 32 – definitions
(b)   Short blast: one second’s duration
(c)    Prolonged blast: four to six second’s duration
short blast (1 second), and prolonged blast (4–6 seconds).

Rule 33 – equipment for sound signals
(a)   Vessel 12米或以上要有a whistle. 20米或以要有a whistle, a bell, 100米或以上, 要有a whistle, a bell, a gong.
Vessels 12 metres (39.4 ft) or more in length should carry a whistle and a bell and vessels 100 metres (328 ft) or more in length should carry in addition a gong. On many vessels, a horn serves the purpose of a whistle.

Rule 34 – manoeuvring and warning signals:
(a) Vessels are in sight of one another. Power-driven vessel:
One short blast: I am altering my course to starboard
Two short blasts: I am altering my course to port
Three short blasts: I am operating astern propulsion

(b) 用了(a)whistle signals.
(i) One flash: I am altering my course to starboard
Two flash: I am altering my course to port
Three flash: I am operating astern propulsion
(ii) Duration of each flash about one second.
Interval between flashes about one second.
Interval between signals shall not be less than 10 seconds.
(iii) The light used for this signal should be all-round white light, visible at a minimum range of 5 miles.

(c)    In sight of one another in a narrow channel or fairway.
(i) Vessel overtake another,
Two prolonged blasts, then one short blast: I intend to overtake you on your starboard side.
Two prolonged blasts, then two short blasts: I intend to overtake you on your port side
(ii) Vessel to be overtaken,答應比人爬頭,根據9(e)(i)要用:
One prolonged, one short, one prolonged, one short blast.

(d)   Vessels in sight of one another. Approaching each other. Vessel in doubt gives at least five short and rapid blasts on the whistle. 可以再補light signal at least five short and rapid flashes.

(e)   Near a bend轉彎位. Channel or fairway where other vessels may be obscured by an intervening obstruction. Sound one prolonged blast.

(f)     如果船上裝了幾個whistles at a distance apart of more than 100 metres.

Rule 35 – sound signals in restricted visibility
restricted visibility area. 不論day or night.
(a)   Power-driven vessel making way.
sound one prolonged blast at intervals not more than 2 minutes.
(b)   Power-driven vessel underway. Stopped and making no way.
At intervals of not more than 2 minutes.
Sound two prolonged blasts with an interval of about 2 seconds.
(c)    Vessel not under command, restricted in her ability to manoeuvre, constrained by her draught, sailing vessel, vessel engaged in fishing, vessel engaged in towing or pushing another vessel.
At intervals of not more than 2minutes, sound one prolonged then two short blasts.
(d)   Vessel engaged in fishing, vessel restricted in her ability to manoeuvre. When at anchor, 不要用(g)signal,(c)signal
(f)     A pushing vessel and a vessel being pushed ahead連在一起,當是power-driven vessel, (a)(b)signal
(g)   At anchor, 每一分鐘內,ring the bell rapidly for about 5 seconds.
一百米以上的船,在船頭ring the bell 5seconds, then船尾sound the gong 5seconds. To give warning.
(h)   Vessel aground (g)signal. 但在前和後面,加上three strokes on the bell.
(i)     Vessel 12-20, 可以不用(g)(h)signal.
(k)    Pilot vessel engaged in pilotage duty, (a)(b)(g),再加上four short blasts辨別身份

Rule 36 – signals to attract attention
如果要用sound or light signals attract attention of another vessel.
不可以用signals confused with rules.

Rule 37 – distress signals
Vessels in distress, requires assistance. annex iv signals
